Historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History <a href=\"#ASNLH\">(ASNLH)*<\/a> chose the second week of February to celebrate \u201cNegro History Week\u201d to coincide with the birthdays of former president Abraham Lincoln and activist Frederick Douglass.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Woodson and ASNLH launched this celebration to bring attention to black history as a discipline. Woodson believed that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>if a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being <a href=\"#exterminated\">exterminated.*<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He sought to increase the visibility of African Americans in culture, first by encouraging the teaching of black history in schools and then disseminating literature in churches and throughout the media.<\/p>\n<p>But even after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s to end discrimination against African Americans and segregation on the grounds of race, religion, gender, or national origin, there was still a dearth of African Americans written about in history textbooks. Campuses across the country expanded the weeklong celebration into a month. By the United States Bicentennial in 1976, President Gerald R. Ford made Black History Month a national observance, honoring the \u201ctoo-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.\u201d Today, Black History Month is celebrated outside the United States, from the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, to Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Ovation joins the celebration, too, featuring prominent African American artists <a href=\"\/watch\/celebrating-black-history-month\">on our slate<\/a> this month. Highlights include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"\/watch\/celebrating-black-history-month\/betty-and-coretta\/\"><strong>Betty and Coretta (available Feb. 15, 2020)<\/strong><\/a>: Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett star as Coretta Scott King and Dr. Betty Shabazz, wives of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, who must carry on as single mothers after their husbands\u2019 assassinations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <a href=\"\/watch\/celebrating-black-history-month\/aaliyah-the-princess-of-rb\/\">Aaliyah: The Princess of R&amp;B (available Feb. 3, 2020)<\/a>: Alexandra Shipp stars in this biopic of Aaliyah. With top-selling albums, a hot movie career, and an adoring fan base, she was poised to become a global R&amp;B icon, until her young life was cut short by tragedy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b><span style=\"color: #dea2a8;\">\u2022 Ride to Freedom: The Rosa Parks Story (available Feb. 23, 2020)<\/span><\/b><\/strong>: Angela Bassett stars as Rosa Parks in this film, which follows her public battle against racism and segregation, and eventually inspiring the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <a href=\"\/watch\/inside-the-actors-studio\">Inside the Actors Studio (available now)<\/a>: <\/strong>Brand new episodes of the esteemed master class on the craft of acting have returned. Guests include David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong\u2019o, and Alfre Woodard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <a href=\"\/watch\/the-great-songwriters\/\">The Great Songwriters (Bill Withers, Chuck D) (available Feb. 1, 2020)<\/a>: <\/strong>Get up close and personal with folk-soul legend Bill Withers and rapper Chuck D, leader of the socially conscious rap group Public Enemy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <a href=\"\/watch\/celebrating-black-history-month\/betty-and-coretta\/\">Laura Mvula Plays Baloise Session (available Feb. 18, 2020)<\/a>: <\/strong>Recorded at the Swiss Baloise Session festival, Laura Mvula soothes with strong pop, R&amp;B, and soul.<\/p>\n<p>These titles are also available on the free <a href=\"\/ovation-now-support\">Ovation NOW<\/a> app.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ASNLH\">*now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)<\/p>\n<p id=\"exterminated\">*C.G.
